About Gundicha Temple Puri
Located on the Bada Danda (Grand Road) in Puri, Gundicha Temple is famously known as the Garden House of Lord Jagannath. It serves as the destination for the holy trinity—Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra—during their annual Rath Yatra journey.
While it remains relatively peaceful throughout the year, the temple becomes the vibrant center of devotion and festivity during the nine-day stay of the deities.
Why Gundicha Temple is important during Rath Yatra
The significance of the Gundicha Temple is deeply rooted in the Rath Yatra (Chariot Festival). It is believed to be the birthplace or the home of the aunt of Lord Jagannath. Every year, the deities travel in their magnificent chariots from the main temple to stay here for a period of nine days, accepting offerings and blessings from devotees before making the return journey known as the Bahuda Yatra.

History and Legends of Gundicha Temple
The temple is named after Gundicha, the queen of King Indradyumna, who is believed to have built the grand Jagannath Temple. According to legend, the Lord was pleased with Queen Gundicha's devotion and promised to visit her house once a year. Thus, the Rath Yatra was established as an annual journey of the Lord to His aunt's house.
Architecture and Temple Layout
Built in the traditional Kalinga style of architecture using light-gray sandstone, the Gundicha Temple features similar structural elements to the main Jagannath Temple. It contains a Vimana (main tower), a Jagamohana (assembly hall), a Nata Mandapa (festival hall), and a Bhoga Mandapa (hall of offerings). The temple is surrounded by a wall and beautiful gardens, which gives it the name "Garden House of Lord Jagannath". The main platform, called the Ratnavedi, is where the deities are placed during their stay.
Gundicha Temple Timings
The temple is generally open for visitors from 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM. However, these timings can vary slightly depending on daily rituals. During the Rath Yatra period, access may be restricted or highly regulated due to massive crowds.
Entry Fee
There is typically no entry fee for darshan on regular days. During specific festival arrangements, visitors are advised to check locally for any special darshan lines or passes that might be implemented by the temple administration.
Best Time to Visit & Time Needed
If you prefer a peaceful darshan to appreciate the architecture, visiting during the early morning or evening outside of the Rath Yatra month is ideal. To experience the spiritual fervor, visiting during the Rath Yatra (usually June or July) is unmatched, though extremely crowded. Generally, a visit takes about 30 to 60 minutes.
Distance & How to Reach
Gundicha Temple is located at the other end of the Bada Danda (Grand Road) in Puri, about 3 kilometers from the main Jagannath Temple. It is easily accessible from all major hotels in Puri via local transport, auto-rickshaws, or pre-booked local taxis.
