What Makes It Special
Three verifiable facts define Chandrabhaga's standing among India's beaches
Awarded in 2018 by the Foundation for Environmental Education, Denmark. Validates 33 strict criteria including water quality, environmental management, safety services, and accessibility.
Faces due east across an unobstructed Bay of Bengal horizon. In winter, pre-dawn temperatures drop to 14-16°C, making the sunrise all the more dramatic when it arrives.
The Konark Sun Temple, 3 km away, was oriented by 13th-century architects to face the same eastern horizon — a connection between landscape and architecture maintained across eight centuries.

The route from Puri to Chandrabhaga follows the scenic 35-km coastal road with the Bay of Bengal to the right and the Balukhand-Konark Wildlife Sanctuary forest to the left. The drive passes the Ramchandi Temple approximately 14 km from Puri.
For sunrise visits, depart Puri no later than 5:00-5:30 AM in winter. Arriving 25-30 minutes before civil twilight gives you time to settle at the shoreline before the sky begins to color.

Sacred Heritage
According to the Samba Purana, Samba — the son of Lord Krishna — was cursed with leprosy. He performed rigorous penance at the mouth of the Chandrabhaga River for twelve years, worshipping the Sun God (Surya). Upon completing his penance, he was cured.
This account established Chandrabhaga as a centre for solar-mediated healing — a tradition that predates modern medicine's understanding of UV therapy by over a millennium.
The beach takes its name from a local legend: Chandrabhaga, daughter of a sage, possessed beauty so extraordinary that the Sun God himself was drawn to her. To preserve her spiritual devotion, she sacrificed her life by jumping into the river.
Her story forms the theological foundation of the Magha Saptami festival — the annual solar worship gathering that draws hundreds of thousands of pilgrims to this shore.
King Narasimhadeva I commissioned the Konark Sun Temple in the 13th century with its face deliberately oriented toward the eastern horizon — the same horizon Chandrabhaga Beach faces.
Historically the temple stood even closer to the shoreline; from inland it appeared to "emerge from the sea" at sunrise. The 3 km separating beach and temple today is a geographical footnote to an eight-century architectural intention.
The Chandrabhaga River was once a significant coastal tributary flowing close to the Konark Sun Temple before meeting the Bay of Bengal. Over centuries it has receded into a shallow, seasonal bed. Its original confluence with the sea remains the site's most sacred point — the exact location where pilgrims immerse themselves during Magha Saptami.
Environmental Excellence
What it means for visitors and why it matters
Sea water is tested for bacterial contamination (E. coli and enterococci) and chemical pollutants against the EU Bathing Water Directive. No industrial or domestic sewage enters the sea at Chandrabhaga.
Labelled waste segregation bins separate dry, wet, and recyclable waste. Wooden boardwalks protect sand dunes from foot-traffic erosion. These are structural requirements, not seasonal clean-ups.
Trained lifeguards stationed at designated points during operating hours. Paramedics and first-aid station present on-site. Especially significant where the Bay of Bengal produces powerful undercurrents.
On-site signage explains the coastal ecosystem. Solar-powered lighting reduces carbon footprint. Wheelchair-friendly pathways ensure access for elderly and differently-abled visitors.
Key Statistic:
India has 13 Blue Flag certified beaches as of 2025. Chandrabhaga was the first (2018) and has retained the certification every year since — a record reflecting consistent environmental management, not a one-time clean-up.
Plan Your Visit
October to February offers ideal weather and all major festivals
October – February
Ideal weather with clear sunrise conditions. All major events including Sand Art Festival, Konark Dance Festival, and Magha Saptami fall within this window.
March – May
Intense heat. Visit only at sunrise (before 7:30 AM) or after 5:00 PM. Midday on exposed beach is uncomfortable and potentially dangerous.
June – September
Heavy rain, rough seas, restricted beach access. Not recommended for first-time visitors.
December 1-5
International Sand Art Festival + Konark Dance Festival
Late January – February
Magha Saptami — book transport 2-3 weeks ahead
November – January
Peak Olive Ridley sea turtle nesting season
October – November
Shoulder season — excellent weather, fewer crowds
Please read these safety guidelines carefully before visiting Chandrabhaga Beach
Swimming is prohibited and strongly inadvisable due to a sharp underwater shelf and powerful undercurrents generated by the open Bay of Bengal. The beach is safe for walking, photography, and sunrise viewing only.
Head to Ramchandi Beach (~22 km toward Puri). The river-sea confluence creates calmer, shallower water suitable for supervised swimming.
Sand heats rapidly after 9:00 AM from March to May. Footwear is essential. Carry sufficient water — vendors are sparse.
Trained lifeguards are stationed under Blue Flag framework, but the no-swimming advisory applies regardless.
Marine Drive has limited lighting. Visit at or after dawn, and return before sunset for safety.

November–February only. Seasonal luxury tented accommodation set on the dunes with cultural performances, bonfires, and gourmet dining. Book 6–8 weeks ahead for December festival period.
Pro Tip:
For most visitors, staying in Puri and making Chandrabhaga a day trip is the most cost-effective approach — Puri offers far wider accommodation choices and the Marine Drive journey is part of the experience itself.
Travel Smart
Light cotton for most of the year. A shawl or windbreaker for pre-dawn winter visits — the sea breeze drops temperatures noticeably before sunrise.
Comfortable sandals or walking shoes. Sand heats rapidly in summer mornings; barefoot walking becomes painful by mid-morning.
Dress modestly at Konark Sun Temple and Ramchandi Temple. Photography permitted in most areas; video recording may attract additional ASI fee.
January and February mornings offer the clearest sunrise conditions. For Sand Art Festival, arrive by 8:00 AM before crowds obscure sculptures.
UPI and card payments accepted at established restaurants. Cash needed for parking, small vendors, and auto-rickshaws within Konark.
4G coverage is reliable along Marine Drive and in Konark town. Coverage becomes intermittent in deeper sections of the wildlife sanctuary.
