What is Chilika Dolphin Point?
"Dolphin Point" is the name boatmen give to the stretches of Chilika Lake near its sea mouth where Irrawaddy dolphins surface most often. For visitors from Puri, the gateway is Satapada, the lakeside town about 50 km south along the Brahmagiri road. Chilika is one of the very few places on earth with a resident Irrawaddy dolphin population, and the lake itself — Asia's largest brackish-water lagoon — is a spectacle even on a day the dolphins stay shy.
The boat ride from Satapada
Boats leave from the Satapada jetty through the OTDC and boat-association counters at their posted rates; the cab fare from Puri never includes the boat. A typical dolphin-plus-sea-mouth loop runs 2 to 3 hours: out across the open lagoon, slow circling at the dolphin stretches, a halt at the sea mouth sandbar where the lake meets the Bay of Bengal, and back. Shorter dolphin-only rides exist when time is tight. Life jackets are provided — insist on wearing them, especially with children.
When are dolphin sightings best?
- Season: November to February is prime — calm water, cool air and the most active dolphins. The lake also fills with migratory birds in these months.
- Time of day: morning boats, roughly 7 to 10 AM, get the calmest surface and best sightings; afternoons turn choppy and hazy.
- Reality check: these are wild animals — most winter-morning boats see dolphins, but no operator can guarantee it. Treat the trip as a lake safari, not a show.
What else to see at Satapada
The sea mouth sandbar is the ride's second highlight — at low tide its flats turn red with thousands of tiny crabs. Rajhans island offers an empty ocean beach reachable by boat, and the jetty-side eateries serve fresh lake fish and crab thalis. Birdwatchers who want more should plan a separate morning at Mangalajodi on the lake's northern marshes.
How to reach Dolphin Point from Puri
Drive Puri → Brahmagiri → Satapada, around 50 km and 1.5 hours each way; there is no practical public-transport timing that matches the morning boat window, which is why most visitors take a Puri to Satapada taxi or the full Puri-Chilika roundtrip package.
