Decoding the North Bank vs South Bank Geography
Satkosia Gorge Tiger Reserve covers an enormous 795 square kilometers across four districts in central Odisha, bisected east-to-west by the Mahanadi River. Understanding the geography is essential for every visitor: there is NO direct bridge crossing over the gorge itself. If your reservation confirmation says "Satkosia Sands Resort - Badmul," your destination is on the South Bank in Nayagarh district. The driving route from Puri heads west via Nayagarh town, Daspalla, and Gania, totaling roughly 180 kilometers.
Conversely, if your booking is for "Tikarpada Nature Camp," "Chhotkei," or "Purunakote," your destination is on the North Bank in Angul district. The driving route from Puri travels north through Cuttack and Dhenkanal to Angul, where you enter the reserve through the Pampasar forest gate. If a traveler mistakenly navigates to the North Bank when their tent is booked at Badmul, correcting the mistake requires driving over 110 kilometers back to the nearest bridge at Subarnapur or Athagarh, wasting over three hours of valuable vacation daylight.

Wildlife Encounters, River Boating and Forest Activities
Satkosia is renowned internationally as the sanctuary where the critically endangered fish-eating Gharial crocodile was pulled back from the brink of extinction. At the Tikarpada Research and Conservation Center on the North Bank, visitors can observe breeding ponds, hatcheries, and educational exhibits. In the wild gorge itself, regulated boat safaris depart from both Badmul and Tikarpada sandbars, accompanied by certified forest department eco-guides.
Beyond the water, Satkosia is a thriving tiger and elephant habitat. The dense mixed deciduous and Sal canopy shelters Indian leopards, spotted deer, sambar, barking deer, and the giant Malabar squirrel. Birding is exceptional, with over 300 recorded species including the elusive Malabar Pied Hornbill, Crested Serpent Eagle, and Stork-billed Kingfisher. In the evening, camps organize tribal folk dance performances, campfire storytelling by forest trackers, and guided star-gazing under pristine unpolluted night skies.

Camp Facilities, Forest Permits and Driver Retention Terms
All nature camps inside Satkosia must be booked in advance through the official state portal (ecotourodisha.com). Accommodations range from luxurious seasonal Swiss tents pitched right on the golden river sands of Badmul (open from October to March) to permanent eco-cottages on wooded bluffs at Chhotkei and Tikarpada. Tariffs typically include all meals—featuring wholesome, freshly prepared Odia rural cuisine using locally sourced organic produce—as well as guided canopy walks.
When arranging transportation with PuriTaxi, we strongly recommend retaining the vehicle and chauffeur across your entire stay. Public transport and ride-hailing apps do not operate in the deep forest interior, and having your private vehicle allows you to travel comfortably between your camp, boat departure sandbars, and scenic watchtowers. Our chauffeurs’ night halt allowances, food, and rural forest entry permits are fully accounted for in our transparent quotes.
