Lingaraj Temple The Spiritual Heart of Ekamra Kshetra

The Lingaraj Temple is the oldest and largest temple in Bhubaneswar, and one of the most significant Shaivite shrines in all of India. Built in the 11th century during the reign of the Somavamshi dynasty, this architectural marvel stands 55 metres (180 feet) tall and showcases the finest example of Kalinga architecture.

The temple complex houses over 150 smaller shrines and is surrounded by a massive fortified wall. The main deity, Lingaraj (Tribhuvaneshwara), is worshipped as Harihara an extraordinary theological concept in which Lord Shiva (Hara) and Lord Vishnu (Hari) are worshipped as one.

The temple sits within the sacred precinct of Ekamra Kshetra, the ancient name for Bhubaneswar, meaning "the forest of a single mango tree," a reference to the divine mango tree under which Shiva is said to have appeared as a Swayambhu Linga.

Visiting Lingaraj after the Jagannath darshan in Puri is a deeply embedded tradition among Vaishnavas and Shaivites alike. Together, these two shrines form the spiritual core of the Swarna Tribhuja (Golden Triangle) of Odisha, along with the Konark Sun Temple.
